The Great Controversy

Overview

Doctrine of Salvation

All humanity is now involved in a great controversy between Christ and Satan regarding the character of God, His law, and His sovereignty over the universe.

This conflict originated in heaven when a created being, endowed with freedom of choice, in self-exaltation became Satan, God’s adversary, and led into rebellion a portion of the angels. He introduced the spirit of rebellion into this world when he led Adam and Eve into sin.

This human sin resulted in the distortion of the image of God in humanity, the disordering of the created world, and its eventual devastation at the time of the global flood, as presented in the historical account of Genesis 1-11.

Observed by the whole creation, this world became the arena of the universal conflict, out of which the God of love will ultimately be vindicated. To assist His people in this controversy, Christ sends the Holy Spirit and the loyal angels to guide, protect, and sustain them in the way of salvation.

Requirements

1. Learn how the Bible describes the origin, glory, and fall of the angel Lucifer, using the figures of the kings of Tyre and Babylon as illustrations. (Ezekiel 28:12, 15; Isaiah 14:12-14)

2. Learn how many angels joined Lucifer in his rebellion against God. (Revelation 12:4)

3. Understand what happened in heaven between the faithful and rebellious angels. (Revelation 12:7-9)

4. Explain how Satan introduced sin to the earth. (Genesis 3:1-6)

5. Define the effects of sin on humanity. (Genesis 6:5)

6. Memorize and recite Deuteronomy 1:30.

7. Share with a friend how we can be prepared to face evil. (Ephesians 6:13-18)

8. Choose a Bible story involving the actions of angels and, with the support of your unit or group, act out the story during a camp, devotional, Sabbath School, youth service, etc.

  • a. Daniel 6 - Daniel protected by angels in the lion’s den
  • b. Matthew 4 - Jesus in the wilderness strengthened by angels
  • c. Acts 5 - Apostles freed from prison by angels

9. Draw a drawing or illustration representing the Great Controversy and explain its meaning.
