Augmented Reality
Overview
Learn the fundamentals of augmented reality (AR) by explaining how it differs from virtual reality, how it works, and how it is used in everyday fields such as education, gaming, navigation, and commerce. Participants explore AR through hands-on experience with different applications, evaluate its benefits and potential risks, design a practical AR idea for their community or church, and reflect on Ephesians 1:18 by considering how technology that enhances our vision can encourage discernment, truth, and a deeper understanding of reality through faith.
Requirements
1. Define Augmented Reality (AR) and clearly explain how it differs from Virtual Reality (VR).
2. Provide examples of at least three different AR applications across various fields (e.g., video games, education, navigation, commerce, etc.).
3. Explain in simple terms how AR works on a smartphone or tablet (the role of the camera, recognition of real-world elements, and the overlay of digital elements). Briefly mention the difference between marker-based and markerless AR.
4. Using a smartphone or tablet, use at least two or three different, accessible AR applications (e.g., an educational app, a location-based game, an app for viewing objects in 3D, etc.). Describe the experience and the usefulness of each app tested.
5. Discuss the potential benefits of AR as well as its possible drawbacks or risks.
6. Conceive and describe an original idea for an AR application that could be specifically useful for your unit, local church, or community.
7. Discuss the connection between the Biblical text of Ephesians 1:18 and AR. How can this technology, which “augments” our vision, prompt us to reflect on the search for meaning and truth? How do we distinguish reality from what has been added?
