Climate Change

Overview

An introduction to the study of climatology and climate change by exploring long-term temperature trends, key environmental concepts, and the effects of global warming on wildlife and the oceans. Participants examine humanity’s responsibility to care for God’s creation through Genesis 2:15 and Jeremiah 2:7, complete a practical environmental project, and participate in activities that promote environmental stewardship, education, and Christian responsibility for protecting the planet.

Requirements

1. What is climatology?

2. Conduct research and create a diagram showing temperature trends between 1900 and 2000.

3. Discuss with your unit our responsibility to care for the environment, drawing on the following texts:

*** Genesis 2:15

4. Explain the following terms:

  • a. Climate change
  • b. Greenhouse gases
  • c. Fossil fuels
  • d. Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • e. Rising sea levels
  • f. Deforestation

5. Based on your research into current events, explain the impact of global warming on wildlife and the oceans.

6. Working alone or in a group, carry out one of the following projects:

  • a. Create a detailed and practical plan for a rainwater harvesting system (including the plan and the associated budget).
  • b. Visit a “third place” and explain how such a location can have a positive impact on the environment.

7. With your unit, participate in two of the following activities:

  • a. Discuss the role of Christians in environmental preservation with young people your age. Write a summary of this for your church or conference website.
  • b. Participate in a “Climate Fresk” workshop or an equivalent activity.
  • c. Give a presentation on the Adventist Church’s ecological initiatives and efforts to preserve the environment.
