Indoor Rock Climbing
Overview
This honor is for those Pathfinders who would like to take their indoor rock climbing skills beyond just a bit of fun with friends. As part of this honor, you will learn how to tie important knots, how to treat your equipment and how to safely belay your friends while they climb.
This honor is to be conducted with the assistance of an appropriately qualified instructor at an indoor rock climbing centere or other appropriately accredited facility.
Requirements
1. Learn the safety precautions that should be followed when climbing (from a qualified instructor).
2. Know how to tie the following knots:
- a. Figure eight
- b. Clove hitch
- c. Double fisherman
- d. Overhand knot
- e. Bowline
- f. Italian hitch
- g. Prusik hitch
3. Know how to properly care for a climbing rope.
4. Know and demonstrate how to safely belay someone on a climb.
5. Demonstrate your ability to climb safely more than 2 meters above the ground using a form of belay.
6. What is the difference between lead climbing, bouldering and top-rope climbing?
7. What is an auto belay and what should be checked before using one?
8. Find a story of someone in the Bible who rock climbed.
9. Your Bible character got his strength through knowing and trusting Jesus. Explain to your teacher how your Bible character used Philippians 4:13 in their life. Be able to recite this text from memory.
