Jesus IV - Method of Mission

Overview

Ranger class; part of the Jesus Collection set forth by the General Conference as a part of their new Pathfinder Curriculum.

Requirements

1. Create a basic Biblical definition of mission. Explain in your own words what mission is. Include in your definition what it is, who does the calling, who is called, what the purpose of that mission calling is, and what types of things one can be called to do. Use texts such as:

2. Apply what you read to these different Jesus encounters:

3. Read one of the mission passages covered in this honor as a small group. Ask each other “how” and “why” questions that will help you learn more about Jesus’ mission in the passage. End the study by asking each other about ways you could apply Jesus’ mission teaching from this Bible study in your community. Close with prayer.

4. Read from the book Steps to Christ (or Steps to Jesus) at least one of the following chapters:

*** Chapter 7: The Test of Discipleship

  • Chapter 8: Growing Up into Christ
  • Chapter 9: The Work and the Life**

5. Choose one Biblical story of mission to illustrate creatively (if working with a group, choose different scenes to illustrate):

(Note: Acts 3:1-10, Acts 4:32-46, Acts 10, and Acts 16:11-40 all contain great stories about the apostles living out different parts of Jesus’ mission.)

  • a. Written and performed skit
  • b. Reader’s theater
  • c. Song (song service or write your own)
  • d. Essay
  • e. Diorama (and tell the story)
  • f. Photo essay (and tell the story)
  • g. Art project (and tell the story)

6. Read the following Bible texts and quotes, and then explain how these illuminate our understanding of Christ’s mission.

  • a. Luke 9:11.
  • b. “The world needs today what it needed nineteen hundred years ago—a revelation of Christ. A great work of reform is demanded, and it is only through the grace of Christ that the work of restoration, physical, mental, and spiritual, can be accomplished.” EGW - The Ministry of Healing, pg. 143
  • c. “Christ’s method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Saviour mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, ‘Follow Me.’
  • “There is need of coming close to the people by personal effort. If less time were given to sermonizing, and more time were spent in personal ministry, greater results would be seen. The poor are to be relieved, the sick cared for, the sorrowing and the bereaved comforted, the ignorant instructed, the inexperienced counseled. We are to weep with those that weep, and rejoice with those that rejoice. Accompanied by the power of persuasion, the power of prayer, the power of the love of God, this work will not, cannot, be without fruit.” EGW - The Ministry of Healing, pg. 143

7. Do the following:

  • a. Write your own translation of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19, 20) after doing the following:

    • Using a Concordance or Bible Dictionary, look up the key words in the Gospel Commission
    • Read the passage in at least three different Bible versions (if possible, in the chosen language), including one paraphrase (if available in the chosen language)

  • b. Apply the principles in the passage by participating in a simple outreach activity, such as:

    • Preparing a personal hygiene kit including a personal note for the recipient.
    • Labeling sealed water bottles with an encouraging message and who it’s from.
    • Making and decorating cookies to distribute at a nursing home, fire station, or police station.
    • Distributing flower baskets with Scripture verses.
    • A similar planned ministry act that it is doable in your area.
