Jesus V - His Teachings

Overview

Friend class; part of the Jesus Collection set forth by the General Conference as a part of their new Pathfinder Curriculum.

Requirements

1. Using a commentary or Bible dictionary as reference, develop a brief written summary of what the main themes the teachings of Jesus were, as recorded in the Bible. You do not need to read all His teachings, but rather consult what others have seen as main themes. After completing the honor requirements, edit your summary as necessary to enunciate your expanded understanding of Jesus’ teachings.

2. Read, watch, or listen to the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). Do the following:

  • a. After reading the Beatitudes (5:1-12), discover the meaning of any words/phrases you don’t understand, then rewrite the Beatitudes in words that make sense to you today.

  • b. Select another passage from Matthew 5-7 (at least one complete teaching or parable) and create an inductive Bible study for a small group Bible study.

  • Possible Topics:

  • c. Evaluate in a discussion or written form why the Sermon on the Mount is considered to be so important. The Andrews Bible Commentary, SDA Bible commentary or other commentary could be consulted.

3. Choose two parables of Jesus to illustrate creatively. It is essential that your chosen options demonstrate application of the parable to your modern context instead of simply sharing the parable as already written in Scripture.

  • a. Skit or first-person monologue
  • b. Reader’s theater
  • c. Song/Poem
  • d. Short essay
  • e. Diorama (and tell the story)
  • f. Photo essay (and tell the story)
  • g. Art project (and tell the story)

4. Choose one of the following teaching passages of Jesus. Summarize the core message(s) in the passage in 200 characters or less. In 100 additional characters or less, state the value of these words in the modern era.

  • a. Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus (John 3)
  • b. Jesus’ Last Instructions & Teachings (John 14, 15, 16 or 17)
  • c. Jesus’ Discourse with the Pharisees (Matthew 22:15-40)

5. Recite, sing or sign the Lord’s Prayer, then do one of the following:

  • a. Write a thoughtful paragraph or poem of at least 50 words (or 8 lines) about what it means to you and share it with someone.
  • b. Give a short worship talk of 3-5 minutes about what it means to you.
  • c. Illustrate the main themes of the Lord’s Prayer artistically with your choice of traditional or digital media.
  • d. Cook a meal where different portions of the meal illustrate the main themes. Explain your meal choices.
  • e. Create an acrostic on what it means to you using the words “Lord’s Prayer.”

6. Do one of the following and, in all cases, provide a verbal or written evaluation of the resource you experienced:

  • a. Read the chapter from Desire of Age or Christ’s Object Lessons (or their modern language equivalent) that matches one of the parables or teachings you are experiencing in this honor.
  • b. Read an article, sermon, or story where another author explains or evaluates one of the parables or teachings you are experiencing in this honor.
  • c. Take notes of a sermon, talk, or presentation you experience that is about one of the parables or teachings you are experiencing in this honor.

7. After completing the other honor requirements, evaluate verbally, digitally, or through writing what Jesus’ teachings mean to you at this moment in time. Some questions to consider include:

*** Which parable or teaching applies the most to my life right now?

  • How does Jesus’ choice of topics to teach about help me understand who He is?
  • What do I think Jesus is trying to tell me through His parables/teachings?
  • What can I do to share the truths Jesus taught with someone else (whom I care for)? What difference could it make to them?**
