Overview
Learn the different methods of mining.
Requirements
1. Define the following terms:
- a. Mine
- b. Shaft
- c. Gallery
- d. Mineral deposit
- e. Mineral
- f. Excavation
- g. Sidewall
2. List the types of mines according to the method of raw material extraction and briefly characterize them.
3. List at least ten types of minerals (including solid, liquid, and gaseous) and correctly identify the method of extraction for each according to the type in requirement 2.
4. Visit at least one mine. Collect information about it, including its history, the raw materials mined there and related interesting facts. Present the collected information in any format.
5. Learn from a mine worker what the job entails and how the safety of the entire crew and individual miners is ensured.
6. Describe the following hazards present in a mine and ways to minimize the associated risk of accidents:
- a. Methane
- b. Carbon dioxide
- c. Cave-ins/collapses
- d. Water
- e. Dust
- f. High temperature
- g. Radiation
7. List at least three negative changes to the natural environment caused by human mining activities.
8. Describe methods of mine ventilation and the equipment used to provide fresh air in blind excavations.
9. Discuss how coal, oil and gas deposits were formed from a creationist perspective.
10. Indicate at least one place in the Bible that mentions a mine and the minerals extracted there.
11. Memorize and explain at least one of the following passages:
- a. Revelation 3:18
- b. Matthew 5:13
- c. Matthew 6:19-20
