Paper Cutting
Overview
Turn simple paper into meaningful art by combining cultural knowledge, artistic techniques, and hands-on creativity, while also exploring how these skills can be used in both traditional and modern contexts.
Requirements
1. Describe the types of decorative and applied arts based on paper cutting (vytynanka, paper graphics, and silhouette cutting).
2. Explain what vytynanka is and how it originated.
3. Explain the differences between paper graphics, silhouette cutting, and vytynanka.
4. List the tools and materials needed for all of the paper cutting techniques listed.
5. Name the types of vytynanka based on composition style (linear, mirror-image, and radial/centric). Create one piece in each style.
6. Name the types of vytynanka based on shape.
7. Create two pieces using the “paper graphics” technique.
8. Create two pieces using the “silhouette cutting” technique.
9. Create two templates based on a Biblical theme (such as an angel, the Christmas star, or the manger) suitable for any of these techniques, and explain other ways they could be used.
10. Discuss the contemporary uses and purposes of vytynanka, paper graphics, and silhouette cutting.
