Tile Laying
Overview
There is a career of tiling that uses logic and creativity in designing a layout for projects, as well as hands-on instruction in cutting and laying tile! Pathfinders will understand the basics of laying tile and should be able to complete a small bathroom floor, backsplash or similar project.
Requirements
1. Discuss the differences in manufacturing and uses of these types of tile:
- a. Glazed
- b. Unglazed
- c. Slate
- d. Granite/marble
2. Describe and demonstrate the proper use of a tile saw. Why is water required for use with a tile saw?
3. Name and draw four different types of tile patterns.
4. Describe the differences between two different types of tile adhesives:
- a. Mastic
- b. Thinset
5. When should dark-colored thinset be used in tile installation? When should light-colored thinset be used for tile installation?
6. Describe how to properly seal and finish a tile project.
7. Discuss the layout of tile in a room. Why is it important to lay tile starting in the center of the room?
8. When should backerboard (CBU) be used during tile installation? Briefly describe proper backerboard installation.
9. Do one of the following:
- a. Install floor tile in a room at least 8′ x 8′ (2.4 m x 2.4 m)
- b. Install wall tile in a room at least 4′ x 6′ (1.2 m x 1.8 m)
- c. Participate in a ministry project where tile is installed and help install the tile
