Whistles - Advanced
Overview
The Advanced Whistle Making Honor takes your whistle-making skills deeper into traditional woodworking, natural materials, and music. You’ll learn how unique whistles work, build two different types from scratch, and learn to play them correctly. This honor combines nature, traditional craftsmanship, science, and music. You’ll work with natural materials, learn how different whistle designs create sound, and build instruments with your own hands. By the end, you won’t just know how whistles work—you’ll have two handmade whistles that you can actually play!
Requirements
1. Have the Whistles honor.
2. What is a sliding bark whistle and who first made this type of whistle?
3. What happens when a branch for making a sliding bark whistle is too large or too small?
4. What is a recorder whistle?
5. Make the following whistles:
- a. willow (sliding bark) whistle
- b. recorder whistle
6. Demonstrate your ability to correctly use each of the whistles you have made.
