Wood Carving
Overview
The Wood Carving Honor is all about turning a simple piece of wood into a handcrafted work of art. You’ll learn how different types of wood behave, master carving tools, understand wood grain, and create your own useful and decorative projects. You’ll develop patience, precision, creativity, and practical tool skills while learning to reveal the beauty hidden inside a piece of wood. By the end, you’ll have several hand-carved creations that you designed and made yourself—a pretty impressive accomplishment!
Requirements
1. Explain the qualities of hard and soft woods and the best woods for wood carving.
2. Describe the different wood carving tools and explain how to sharpen them.
3. Explain the best methods of handling the grain of wood in designing.
4. Design and carve a plaque in low relief.
5. Design and carve two of the following items:
- a. Whistle
- b. Letter opener
- c. Tray
- d. Bookends
- e. Clock case
- f. Equivalent items of your choice
