Bible Discovery I
Overview
This honor fulfills the “Spiritual Experiences” requirements for the General Conference Friend Achievement Class. It covers the stories and truths told in the Old Testament narratives found in the books of Genesis - Ruth (Patriarchs, Exodus, Promised Land, Joshua, Judges, Ruth).

- 11. Growing in Christ
- 19. The Law of God
- 20. The Sabbath
- 23. Marriage and the Family
Requirements
1. List reasons why a person should pray before studying or exploring the Bible? While completing this honor, pray for God’s guidance.
2. Memorize or illustrate 2 Timothy 3:16-17. List three reasons this verse is essential to an understanding of the Bible as God’s messages to us.
3. Define, explain or illustrate the following terms within a Biblical context:
- a. Version/Translation
- b. Old Testament
- c. Pentateuch
- d. Creation
- e. Global flood
- f. Covenant
- g. Exile
- h. Exodus
- i. Judge
- j. Theocracy
4. Memorize seven key verses/passages from the Pentateuch and history (pre-monarchy) portions of the Bible. Be able to explain each verse’s importance.
Suggested passages include:
- a. Genesis 1:26-27 (Relationship)
- b. Genesis 2:3 (Doctrine)
- c. Genesis 3:15 (Salvation)
- d. Genesis 9:11 (Promise)
- e. Genesis 12:1-3 (Promise)
- f. Genesis 31:49 (Prayer)
- g. Exodus 3:14 (Doctrine)
- h. Exodus 20:8-11 (or 10 Commandments) (Doctrine)
- i. Joshua 24:15 (Behavior)
- j. Ruth 1:16 (Relationship)
- k. Hebrews 11:1-3 (Salvation)
- l. Hebrews 11:8-12 (Salvation)
5. Memorize the Old Testament books of the Bible in order and know the five areas into which the books are grouped. Demonstrate your ability to find any given book.
6. Individually or with a group, read and talk about a Bible story from the books of Genesis - Ruth that tell about the Sabbath (like Numbers 16). Discover what it teaches about the Sabbath. Then, make a list of five blessings or good things that come from keeping the Sabbath.
7. On a map drawn of the Biblical region and era, identify the following locations and explain their significance during the pre-monarchy era:
- a. Mt. Ararat
- b. Babel
- c. Egypt
- d. Sinai
- e. Canaan
- f. Red Sea
- g. Jordan River
8. In consultation with your leader, choose one of the following Old Testament characters: Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Deborah or Ruth. Read their story (or selected parts of it in the case of Abraham, Joseph or Joshua), then discuss with your group how God showed His love and guidance in their life.
9. Choose one of the stories found in the Pentateuch or pre-monarchy history Bible books (Genesis -Ruth). Retell the story in your own words through a skit, presentation, video, or other hands-on experience and share it with a group.
10. Visit one of the following and give your leader a report of the diversity and wonder of the things you saw of God’s creation:
- a. Zoo
- b. Aquarium
- c. National/State/Provincial Park
- d. Nursery
- e. Gardens
- f. Equivalent location
